Sedge Warbler

Very short visit today to Chew Valley Lake on way into work, at least 2 maybe 3 Sedge Warblers (131) singing. Reports of 12+ Hobby's on the Levels and a Hooded Crow confirmed (last one in 2003) at the coast.

Also following from yesterdays posting, I've created a new "gardening" blog. Link left. As summer's here, I tend to slow down with the birding, increase the painting (it's the morning light you know) and gardening activities (constant battle with the weeds).

  3. Hi again Border, two visits in one day - playing catch-up :-D

So glad I popped by this morning to see you have set up a garden blog too. I will follow that with interest :-D

However, it was a bird ID I have given someone this morning that has also brought me here. I was sent a photo of a male Mallard swimming 'quite cosy' with a male Wood Duck in a village pond. How uncommon is the Wood Duck in England?

Have a great weekend in the garden or out birding. We have rain and need to watch our petrol consumption :-(

  4. Hi Shirl

Wood Ducks aren't a UK species, So I guess very rare :-) If it's the one I'm thinking of they come from North America, therefore this one will probably be an escapee. Given that it's on a village pond, more than likely somone has put it there for ornamental purposes. Mind you is it is a genuine wild bird, it's a rare vagrant. BR
