The Gale, the Potter and the Waxwings

Well the winds that were promised have come and gone. Which is a shame as the glorious beech woods near Great Bedwyn were an absolute picture when I drove through them for the Saturday papers. So many a skeletal tree has been left this morning bare against a blue autumnal sky.

But all is not lost. As I walked in today, this Andy Goldsworthy-esk piece of natural artwork had developed in one of the rainwater ponds adjacent to the Catholic Cathedral in Bristol. I love it and yet again nature surprises me in the most unexpected places.

Speaking of unexpected things, a fellow blogger Sian, has posted on her blog "Life on a Small Island" a link to another blog where waxwings spent some time in the garden and the resulting photographs are absolutely stunning. See the photos here....!

And finally, my first programme in the current run of Radio 4's Living Worlds went out yesterday - there is still time to listen to it on the BBC i-Player. Click the link here.

  1. Thanks for the plug. And the link to your programme - I must catch up on that. Oh the joys of iPlayer! So glad you are back blogging again - I'd only just discovered you and you disappeared ;-)

  2. Andrew, that program was fascinating. And the picture of the tiny pot. I was amazed. Also the leaves in the water make a lovely picture. Great shot.

  4. Thanks for the nudge, I shall have a listen tomorrow. Thanks also for the Waxwing link, that was absolutely stunning, I am almost lost for words, I have never seen anything like it!! Have you given Autumnwatch the nod, surely they would be interested?

  5. Hi Sian, thank you, and we all must help and plug each others efforts. I'm not going anywhere.

Hi Oldcrow, thanks for the feedback. I've got 4 more programmes coming up, I'll blog then just before they go out, but they are Hedges, Moths, Trees and Ravens, I think you'll like the Raven one.

Hi Shysongbird, indeed autumnwatch have been informed... watch this space.

  6. Great to see another link to the Fair Isle Waxwings. I agree with Jan - just stunning!I'm guessing you knew they were appearing on Autumnwatch on Thursday ;-)

On Friday, when I was posting a query on my one eyed Blackbird on a forum I came across the link to Tommy's Waxwing Blog post. Should have been here earlier :-D

No matter, still writing my rather lengthy post yesterday, I emailed Tommy and asked if I could post one of his photos (my fav) and was thrilled when he agreed!!
